dlayman@pitt.edu

Dave Layman is in his 4th season as head coach. Formerly an assistant coach and general manager with Pitt Johnstown, Layman’s main responsibilities included: off-ice conditioning, weight training programs for individual players, on-ice player development, penalty kill systems and goaltending from 2004-2006. During this period, Pitt Johnstown qualified for the National Championships twice and also won the College Hockey East Championship twice. The team’s highest final ranking came in 2005-2006 with an 11th place finish at Nationals held in Fort Myers, Florida. The prior year, Pitt Johnstown finished ranked 15th under the direction of Coach Layman. Layman has coached for 150 games prior to the 2009-2010 season with Pitt Johnstown. His overall record behind the Icecat’s bench is 101 – 49 with a winning percentage of .673.

Professionally, Layman is a Senior Civil Engineer Supervisor – Project Manager for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation since early 2004. Layman received his Civil Engineering degree from the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown. Coach Layman’s duties consist of overseeing highway and bridge projects along with supervising, managing and directing the work, schedule, and budget of private consulting firms hired to perform design, environmental, right of way and utility services for the Department.
Layman began his playing career at the young age of 5 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania working his way up through the youth, midget, junior and college ranks. Layman’s high school and collegiate careers are lined with most valuable player awards, all-star appearances, select teams and national teams. One highlight of his playing career was being selected to attend the National Goalkeepers Camp for both U16 and U17 USA Hockey National Development teams held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Layman was a 4 time all-star for the College Hockey East and a 2 time Pitt Johnstown MVP. He is the only head coach in the history of the College Hockey East to ever win a CHE Championship as a player and also as a coach. Layman’s coaching philosophy is quite simple; “Full Speed”. He teaches and promotes hard work, dedication and commitment to the Pitt Johnstown hockey organization both on the ice and in the classroom. The “Full Speed” attitude is then carried through the offensive aggressive hard hitting system on the ice. “I have extraordinary athletic and academic expectations for all the players that come through our system. By setting the bar high and challenging these student/athletes builds a certain and unique strength of character that I hope my players carry with them throughout their professional careers after graduation. The Pitt Johnstown hockey program takes pride in the encouragement of positive attitude, competition, winning, sportsmanship, and development of hockey player’s on ice ability; while also striving to lay the groundwork and foundation for our players to have successful professional careers in the workplace.”
