IceCats Clinch Another Nationals Berth

The UPJ hockey team defeated Robert Morris University on Friday February 20 and Farmingdale State University on Saturday February 21 to win the ACHA Men’s DIII Regional Tournament. By winning the 2015 Atlantic Regional Tournament,  the UPJ IceCats qualified for a spot at the Men’s Division III National Tournament. The #5 seeded UPJ IceCats began the weekend by defeating the #8 seeded Robert Morris Colonials on Friday February 20th by a score of 4 to 3 in the Atlantic Regional semi-finals. RMU scored 3 unanswered goals during the first period to take an early 3-0 lead, but the IceCats overcame the 3 goal deficit in the second period to tie the game. Troy Schall scored  2 goals and the third was scored  by sophomore defenseman Dan Yost. UPJ’s freshman Jake Miller  scored the fourth and game winning goal halfway through the third period.

The UPJ IceCats continued their trek toward the ACHA Men’s Division III National Tournament Saturday February 21st as they battled #4 Farmingdale State at the York City Ice Arena for the Atlantic Regional Championship game. UPJ won the game 6-5 in sudden death overtime.  The action packed game resulted in a 5-5 tie at the end of regulation which lead the teams to the 20 minute sudden death overtime period. The scorers in regulation were junior Bryan Albright with 2 goals, senior Troy Schall,  freshman Hunter Grafton, and sophomore Cody Austad. The overtime game winning goal was scored at the 16:12 mark by Greater Johnstown high school graduate, Derek Grove. UPJ’s goaltender, Tyler Mains, stopped 45 of 50 Farmingdale shots on goal. UPJ’s overall record is 24 wins and 5 losses.  The IceCats will play in the National Championship Tournament in Pelham, Alabama March 10 – March 14 hosted by the University of Alabama.  UPJ will face Colorado State University, University of Alabama, and Michigan State University in Pool B in an effort to earn a National Title. This is the second consecutive season in which UPJ won the Atlantic Regional Tournament and qualified for the National Tournament.
