On Friday March 7, 2014, the UPJ IceCats (29-5-2) defeated the California
University of PA Vulcans (25-3-0) by a score of 7 to 6 to win the 2014
College Hockey East Championship. UPJ entered the CHE Championship game as
the #2 seed while CALU was the #1 seed. Last weekend in the CHE
semi-finals UPJ defeated Fredonia State 6 to 4 and CALU defeated Robert
Morris (ACHA) 6 to 2 to earn their spots in the Championship game. This
is the 3rd time in University history that UPJ has won the College Hockey
East Championship (2003 and 2005). CALU has won 7 consecutive CHE
Championships, 2007-2013, however their dominance has finally been ended
by UPJ with their victory on Friday night at Delmont Center Ice Arena.
UPJ led after the first period by a score of 2 to 1. Troy Schall and
Bryan Albright scored for the IceCats in the first period while Tim
Gleason scored for CALU. At 16:52 into the second period, Bryan Albright
notched his second goal of the night putting UPJ up 3-1 however CALU took
control for the remainder of the period by scoring 4 unanswered goals.
The score to start the third period was CALU 4 UPJ 3. Just 40 seconds
into the third period, UPJ’s Derek Grove scored a powerplay goal to tie
game at 4. Less than 2 minutes later, Nick Blair put CALU up 5 to 4 with
17:22 remaining in the 3d period. UPJ regained control of the game when
Marc Swankler scored on a breakaway tying the game at 5 followed by another
UPJ powerplay goal by Anthony Pioli, which put UPJ up 6 to 5. With 5:22
left in the 3rd period, Bryan Albright earned his hat trick on the night
giving UPJ another 2 goal lead. With 1:28 remaining in the game, Derek
Grove took a tripping penalty and CAL went on the powerplay. CAL pulled
their goalie, putting them on a 2 man advantage and scored a powerplay
goal with 25 seconds left in game. With a score of 7 to 6, UPJ called for
a timeout as the faceoff went to center ice. As the puck dropped, CALU
pulled their goalie once again and managed to get the puck deep in UPJ’s
defensive zone. Dave Dunkleberger, making a total of 40 saves during the
game, stood strong in net making 3 critical saves in the last few seconds
of the game and not allowing CAL to tie it up earning the victory. UPJ had
29 shots on goal and was successful on 4 out of 6 on powerplays. UPJ was
led by Eugene Mack with 5 points (0 goals 5 assists, Troy Schall 4 points
