News on the PSB game – On Saturday January 23 the icecats headed to
Mercyhurst to take on Penn State Behrend (PSB). The icecats were without
impact players John Poloyac, Kyle Harnen and Kyle Harnish due to previous
suspensions for fighting against Pitt Greensburg. Also missing from the
lineup this semester is Eugene Mack, Tim Graulty, Justin Shaffer, and Greg
Szentkiralyi due to academic requirements not being fulfilled first
semester. The Icecats hit the ice hard in the first period scoring the
first goal early in the game. PSB bounced back and scored to tie the game
at 1. Ryan Crago scored on a penalty shot with a snipe backhander top
shelf and goals were traded off between teams. The score was tied 3 to 3
at the end of first period. After the first period, the Icecats fell
apart, giving up 4 goals in the second period and 6 goals in the third for
a final of 13 to 3. Coach Layman on the game “I was pleased with the play
of everyone during the first 20 minutes of the game, especially with such
a short bench. In the first period, guys who don’t see a regular shift
were out there against a Regionally ranked team (#13) and competing, which
was great to see. It was a back and forth, up and down type of period.
However, after the first, the D started backing up into the defensive
zone, the forwards slowed down a bit and Wes let in a few weak ones. The
guys need to learn to play the game for all 60 minutes, not just 20, not
just 40, all 60.”
