game was played much closer than the score depicted

News on the RMU game – On Sunday January 24, Pitt Johnstown took on the
Robert Morris Colonials (ACHA) team. The final score was 6 to 1 Robert
Morris, however the game was played much closer than the score depicted.
The icecats tallied 30 shots on goal, however they couldn’t seem to find
the back of the net. Robert Morris goalie, Jon Dominick played
outstanding, stopping 29 of 30 shots. Kyle Harnen and Kyle Harnish were
back in the lineup, which definitely made a difference in the depth of the
icecats lineup. Kyle Harnen scored the icecats lone goal in the third
period. Coach Layman on the game, “RMU is a great hockey team this year,
ranked #3 in the Atlantic Region, and will probably end up at Nationals.
We were in the game from start to finish, threw the body around, played
our positions and put up 30 shots on goal. RMU did outplay us, but not by
much. The score could have easily been 4 to 2, instead of 6 to 1. Games
like this happen in hockey. Wes Cramer (in goal for the icecats) played
fantastic stopping 43 of 49 shots, a few breakaways and 2 point blank
one-timers off the back door. Even though we lost the game, I saw many
positives from the team. We are going to work hard this week at practice,
try to clean up a few things in our defensive zone and finish this season
on a winning streak against Gettysburg, West Virginia (twice) and IUP.”

News on the PSB game

News on the PSB game – On Saturday January 23 the icecats headed to
Mercyhurst to take on Penn State Behrend (PSB). The icecats were without
impact players John Poloyac, Kyle Harnen and Kyle Harnish due to previous
suspensions for fighting against Pitt Greensburg. Also missing from the
lineup this semester is Eugene Mack, Tim Graulty, Justin Shaffer, and Greg
Szentkiralyi due to academic requirements not being fulfilled first
semester. The Icecats hit the ice hard in the first period scoring the
first goal early in the game. PSB bounced back and scored to tie the game
at 1. Ryan Crago scored on a penalty shot with a snipe backhander top
shelf and goals were traded off between teams. The score was tied 3 to 3
at the end of first period. After the first period, the Icecats fell
apart, giving up 4 goals in the second period and 6 goals in the third for
a final of 13 to 3. Coach Layman on the game “I was pleased with the play
of everyone during the first 20 minutes of the game, especially with such
a short bench. In the first period, guys who don’t see a regular shift
were out there against a Regionally ranked team (#13) and competing, which
was great to see. It was a back and forth, up and down type of period.
However, after the first, the D started backing up into the defensive
zone, the forwards slowed down a bit and Wes let in a few weak ones. The
guys need to learn to play the game for all 60 minutes, not just 20, not
just 40, all 60.”

Junior Paul Ciotti, Icecats leading scorer, tallied 2 goals and 1
assist against Pitt Greensburg this past weekend in a 6-3 loss. Paul
currently has 9 goals and 11 assists in 15 games played.
Which brings his total career points to 43 in only 39 games.

On a less positive note,
#22 Kyle Harnish, #81 Kyle Harnen and all-star selection #14 John Poloyac received game
disqualificaitons for fighting and will be out for the upcoming game
against Penn State Behrend.

Icecats starting goalie graduates...

The University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown would like to congratulate Mike Inman on his successful and outstanding career for the Icecats. Mike will be graduating in December 2009 and will be pursuing his Master’s Degree and starting his professional career in the workplace.

Inman’s overall record, in his 95 games played, is 54 wins and 41 losses posting a Goals Against Average of 3.61 and a save percentage .917. Inman was selected to participate in the College Hockey East All-Star game and Skills Competition 3 years in a row. In 2008-2009, Mike was the first goaltender in College Hockey East history to receive the Kevin Du Mond award, which is the Most Valuable Player of the CHE All-Star game. Also in 2008-2009, Inman was selected as an All-Atlantic Region team member as a result of his play throughout the entire season, including a stellar performance at the ACHA Regional Championships in Philadelphia, PA. Inman was the starting goaltender for the Icecats during their highest final ranking (11th) at the ACHA National Tournament in 2006, held in Ft. Myers, Florida.

The Pitt-Johnstown Icecats have qualified for the CHE playoffs 9 consecutive seasons. The previous 4 playoff appearances were spearheaded by the play of Inman in net. Coach Layman: “Mike Inman has been a huge, probably the largest, factor contributing to our success, regionally and nationally, the past 4 seasons. Mike has stolen and won games when we were outshot, outworked and outplayed. Amongst many, one game that comes to mind is the first regular season game in the 2008-2009 season, a 4-3 win against Robert Morris University, in which Mike stood on his head the entire game, stopping 55 of 58 shots including many breakaways and point blank one-timers.

Mike has been a team leader on the ice and in the locker room. The combination of his leadership and on-ice ability will be greatly missed and I wish him the best of luck in his future.”

If you happen to catch Icecats freshman goalie Dave Dunkleburger around town, odds are he is probably on his way to hockey

If you happen to catch Icecats freshman goalie Dave Dunkleburger around town, odds are he is probably on his way to hockey…

Dave’s schedule is a reflection of his commitment and dedication to hockey. “Hockey is my passion” Dave says, and indeed it is. Besides his business classes at UPJ, Dave’s weekly schedule consists of nothing but hockey related activities.

When he is not practicing or suiting up for Icecats games, Dave is also the starting goalie for the local

Johnstown Jets AA junior team. The commitment requires him to attend two practices a week and travel to games on the weekend. “We are developing Dave for the future, says Icecats coach Dave Layman, “when he is not suiting up for us, we allow him to play for the junior team” which gives Dave a lot of ice time.

With a combine total of four practices a week and two games a weekend, he is also working for Ziggy sports, the local hockey store in downtown Johnstown. “I actually work a lot of hours in between practices and classes” he says. When schedule permits, Dave also works at the Johnstown Chiefs hockey game, helping the war memorial staff. “I like this job because it allows me to watch pro hockey”. In addition, Dave is a part time referee for the adult hockey league at planet ice. Not to mention he is also the goalie coach for the younger Johnstown Jets goalies all year round.

“I come from a hockey family, we talk and watch hockey all the time, and all my friends play, so I can say it’s obviously the biggest part of my life”

Dave is enjoying the UPJ experience he is getting by playing and practicing at a high level. “I’m enjoying learning from Coach Layman, and especially from senior goalies Inman and Cramer.

He also enjoys playing video games on is rare free time “I play NHL 2010, nothing else!”

Catch Dave and your UPJ Icecats in action this coming Saturday December 12th at War Memorial as they take on Robert Morris. Game time is 2:30pm.
